In Greek Mythology, Adonis, a god who was so handsome and attractive, that he was the center of everyone’s attention. All women were attracted to him and the beautiful goddess Aphrodite was no exception. It was said that the couple was never seen to be apart from each other.
One day, Aphrodite had to go to the mortal world to perform some duties and knowing that Adonis was planning to go hunting, she advised him to not go too deep into the forest and to stay away from any animals that do not run away from him.
Adonis confidently ignored these warnings as he considers himself a great hunter so deep into the forest he went.
Unbeknownst to him, Ares, the god of war, who was also one of Aphrodite’s many lovers, was blinded by jealousy of their love and sought to get revenge. So he disguised himself as a wild boar and attacked Adonis, mortally wounding him.
Hearing Adonis’ cries, Aphrodite rushed into the forest to help him, clothes and flesh torn by the thorny bushes in her haste; but she was too late ---Adonis was already breathing his last breath. In an effort to ease his sufferings, Aphrodite sprinkled the nectar of the gods and sang to him until he peacefully passed into the realm of the dead.
It is said that the blood that flows from Adonis’ wounds became the Adonis River, more popularly known today as the river of Nahr Ibrahim in coastal Lebanon and that the drops of Aphrodite’s blood from her wounds and scratches turned into Rose Quartz.
These days, Rose quartz is still regarded as the stone of unconditional love, in respect to the story of Adonis and Aphrodite. In Eastern philosophy, the Rose Quartz is connected to the Heart Chakra, which opens up to heart to all forms of love, compassion and self-esteem which also helps enhance positive affirmations.
