All through history, flowers have been used for a lot of things. People use flowers to signify compound emotions, like fidelity, remembrance and love. Flowers have been used for centuries for aromatherapy, medicinal and other healing causes. Nowadays, people normally send cut arrangements and bouquets as a way to communicate things such as “I’m sorry” and “Thank you”.
Here are some of the interesting historical facts about flowers:
- The price of Tulips in the 17th century was more than gold
They have been one of the biggest sellers in the world, particularly in the Netherlands, where more than 3 billion tulips are grown each year. They have never been more precious than they were in the 17th century in Holland, when they were deemed to be worth more than most valuable metals, including gold. Others say one bulb could cost more than $2,000! Another intriguing fact about tulips? They can substitute onions in recipes.
Currently, they are a bit more fairly priced.
- The world's smelliest bloom
A Sumatran local called titan arum, is believed to emit an unpleasant smell similar to that of a dead body. It’s mostly known as the “corpse flower.” It is also assumed to be the largest flower, oftentimes standing 3 meters tall.
- The oldest bloom
The Archaefructus was a fossil discovered by scientists in 2002. It is believed to have blossomed more than 100 million years ago in China which makes it to be the oldest flower in the world. It is currently known and called the mother of all flowers.
- Gas plants
They are known for their sensitive pink and white flowers, but the plants produced more than just blooms. They release colorless gas, on warm nights, which some said can actually be lighted.
- The reviving lotus
Ancient Egyptians were very keen about the Lotus bloom, which they deemed holy. They believed the flower signified resurrection because it can lay dormant inactive for years during droughts, then blossoming again when the ground becomes moist enough again. Egyptians also used it during burials.
- Moon flowers’ strange bloom
It is another distinctly special plant. While most blooms need at least a little sunshine to flourish, moon flowers blossom at night in the radiance of the moon.
- Sunflowers bask
They are known for their beauty and candor, and their name is actually very suitable. Sunflowers love the sun, and their heads change way to point toward the sun as it shifts from east to west every day.
